“Comrade VS Achuthanandan Passes Away at 101: Kerala’s Legendary Communist Leader Bids Farewell”

A Tireless Champion of the Marginalized, VS Achuthanandan Stepped Away from Public Life After a 2019 Stroke.

Veteran Communist leader and former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan passed away on Monday at the age of 101, following prolonged hospitalization. He had been admitted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on June 23 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence. Since then, he had been on ventilator support in the intensive care unit.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPM state secretary MV Govindan rushed to the hospital to meet the bereaved family. Several prominent political leaders have also been arriving to pay their last respects to the legendary leader.

A lifelong advocate for the rights of the marginalized and a towering figure in Kerala’s political landscape, Achuthanandan had largely withdrawn from public life after suffering a minor stroke in 2019.

In January 2021, he officially stepped down as chairman of the Administrative Reforms Committee. Since then, he had been living alternately with his son and daughter in Thiruvananthapuram.
