Prayagraj, July 20: The holy city of Prayagraj is facing a looming flood threat as water levels in both the Ganga and Yamuna rivers continue to rise rapidly. As of 10:00 AM on Saturday, both rivers have crossed the warning level and are now inching dangerously close to the officially declared danger mark.
Significant Rise Overnight
According to official reports, the water level of the Ganga River surged by 83 centimeters overnight, reaching 82.74 meters by Saturday morning. Similarly, the Yamuna River saw an alarming rise of 118 centimeters, with its level reaching 82.63 meters.
In Prayagraj, the danger mark is set at 83.73 meters, which means the rivers are now just about 1 meter below the critical level, raising serious concerns for the city’s low-lying areas.
Authorities on High Alert
Local authorities have sounded an alert and are closely monitoring the situation. The district administration is coordinating with disaster management teams to assess the risk and prepare for possible evacuations.
Evacuations Begin in Vulnerable Areas
Residents living near the riverbanks and in flood-prone areas have already begun to move to safer places as a precaution. Temporary shelters and relief centers are being established to accommodate displaced families if the water level continues to rise.
